Breathe In, Breathe Out

Harold Gutmann
Practicing mindfulness helps our players grow as students and as athletes.

Feeling stressed on the field? Learn to calm yourself by practicing mindfulness.

Matt Smith, associate director of campus ministry, conducts weekly meditations on Thursday mornings with the baseball team.

The sessions focus on breathing techniques and sitting meditations in order to cultivate the importance of paying attention and letting go.

Smith has also worked with the women’s soccer and women’s track and cross country teams, and is planning to work with women’s water polo.

“This is part of who we say we are as a university. We’re giving people this whole-body experience,” Smith said. “It’s not just about the academics and the athletics. It’s about the mind, the body, and the spirit – how they come together and interact with each other on a daily basis.”
