Associate Provost Global Engagement Update
We invite all faculty, staff, and students to stop by the International Student Graduation Celebration today, Wednesday, June 11, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the Williman Room and Patio, Benson Center. This is the third international student graduation celebration of the year for international students who are Undergraduates, Graduate Business, Education and Counseling Psychology, Graduate Engineering, and Pastoral Ministries. At the event, international students pick up their graduation sash that represents their home country and enjoy photos and refreshments with campus colleagues, mentors, family, and friends. Come and show your support. The international student JST graduation celebration was held May 13, and international students in the Law School were celebrated on May 22.
In contrast to this happy moment celebrating the success of our graduating international students, we are also working with continuing and incoming international students and scholars who are impacted by the federal government travel ban and visa revocations. These federal government actions target students and scholars from particular countries and they impact both current members of our community and also new incoming international community members. Students and scholars who are impacted are receiving communications and updates from our International Students and Scholars team. You can learn more about the impacts of these federal government actions and see how you can voice your support for international students on our U.S. Government Updates page.
While there are many challenges facing global partnerships, international students, and education abroad at the moment, we are still expanding opportunities and access to global experiences and global learning at SCU. The U.S. Department of State has approved our application to enable us to support a new immigration category and program for short-term scholars. This new immigration program will allow for more research collaboration, reduce restrictions on repeated engagement of international scholars, and allow for more flexibility in the types and duration of international scholars at SCU. We recently issued the first immigration documents for this new program for an Italian scholar to join the School of Engineering in the fall.
Best,

International Education Conference
Global Engagement attended the NAFSA international education conference in San Diego at the end of May. This is the largest international education conference in the United States with over 8,000 international education colleagues from around the world attending. The conference is a key event for international education leaders, fostering international partnerships, and engaging with best practices in education abroad and international students and scholars. We met many of SCU international partners at the conference, from Australian Catholic University to Sogang University and several others.
Graduation Livestream for International Families Abroad
The June 14 Commencement ceremonies will be live streamed and posted on the Commencement website. International students can share this information with their families if they are not able to travel to the U.S. for graduation.
Take Action: Support International Exchange Programs
You can urge Congress to preserve funding for international exchange programs including Fulbright, Gilman, IDEAS, Critical Language Scholarship, and programs through Education USA, the network that promotes U.S. higher education and supports international recruitment to U.S. colleges and universities around the world. Students are strongly encouraged to explore and plan for global experiences early and the Get Started advising module can help. Participate in the Module this summer to learn about global opportunities, eligibility, and the process.
