Acts of Discrimination at SCU

Oct. 9: Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger responds to an act of discrimination at SCU.

Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger responds to an act of discrimination at SCU.

Dear members of the Santa Clara community,

In the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 8, community facilitators in Casa Italiana noticed disturbing vandalism on the 4th-floor community bulletin board and on a poster inside the Casa elevator. The inflammatory writing on the bulletin board was an attack against members of the LGBTQ community. The poster inside the elevator had a drawing of a swastika in blood. It is unclear at this time if the two acts were committed by the same person or persons.

Acts such as these are deplorable and violate the core values and ethos of the Santa Clara University community.

Campus Safety Services and the Office of Student Life are investigating the incident, reviewing video tapes around the location and working to identify who is responsible for these reprehensible acts of discrimination. If you have any information about this incident, please contact Campus Safety Services at 408-554-4441.  Alternatively, an anonymous report can be submitted via ethicspoint.com.

Following standard protocol, the university has also notified the Santa Clara Police Department about the incident and will cooperate fully in their investigation.

I will keep students, faculty and staff updated as the investigation proceeds and more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Rosenberger
Vice Provost for Student Life
