MFT/PCC Practicum

About Practicum:

The MFT Practicum at CAPS offers a comprehensive training program for SCU CPSY students to continue developing their identity as a psychotherapist and gain the experience of providing ethical and efficacious treatment. 

CAPS is a diverse and multidisciplinary center where trainees will have access to consultation with psychologists, medical staff, campus partners, and other university resources in addition to the experienced training supervisors. 

Trainees also receive support from the supervision team in personal and professional development as a psychotherapist. CAPS provides an opportunity to further strengthen theoretical orientations, discover and work through countertransference, apply evidence-based treatments to adult populations, and incorporate curiosity into the journey. Trainees are invited to grow alongside each other in mutual enrichment. 

 

The practicum program will provide treatment opportunities with adults in the University environment facing a wide breadth of presenting concerns and clinical goals. The primary modality practiced will be individual therapy however opportunities may include couples therapy or group therapy/workshops. Common treatment experience includes but is not limited to:

  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Substance use
  • Trauma
  • Relational and family issues
  • Identity and belonging 

Due to the CAPS model of outpatient weekly therapy with MFT trainees, higher acuity populations are exclusionary criteria for both trainees and CAPS staff. 

Throughout the academic year, the MFT-T cohort will receive training through individual supervision, group supervision, shadowing, case consultation, and training seminars to hone their skills in the treatment phases of:

  • Assessment
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment planning
  • Intervention
    • Psychoeducation
    • Coping skills development
    • Advanced processing
  • Termination
  • Case management
  • Case conceptualization 

 

Clinical experience not only encompasses treatment but also essential psychotherapy skills of:

  • Electronic medical record management and documentation 
  • Formal case presentations
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Cultural curiosity 

 

Desired applicant qualifications include: 

  • Ability to provide a safe therapeutic environment for clients and a collaborative professional work ethic
  • Ability to manage personal self-care and be open to exploring impacts and countertransference related to the role 
  • Foundational knowledge of various theoretical orientations and frameworks appropriate to serving a variety of clinical presentations/needs.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Providing direct service a consistent weekly caseload
  • Attendance of individual/group supervision, required meetings, trainings, and case consultation sessions 
  • Compliance with CAPS policies and procedures, MFT-T Training Manual, CAMFT Code of Ethics, and California legal requirements 
  • Maintain clinical record 
  • Other duties as assigned to the position

 

Position details:

    • Paid student employee position 
    • Commencement and duration 
      • Submission of mandatory personnel documentation during Summer, 
      • Training begins 2 weeks prior to the Fall quarter, Sept 7, 2026
      • Practicum concludes at the end of Spring quarter, June 13, 2027 
    • Work schedules are in person, 24 hours per week 8:30pm-5:00pm 
  • *Students who have received therapy through SCU CAPS (not including workshops) are not eligible for this practicum 
  • Requirements: 
    • Maintain a California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) Membership
    • Maintain Professional Liability Insurance Coverage
    • Enrollment in TrackYourHours
