Director's Message
Welcome to Our Fall 2022 Issue!
The Mindset from Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University is jam-packed with perspectives and updates from across our campus!
At Ciocca Center, we like to try new ideas, which is inherently risky. This issue highlights some of the ways we can “manage our risk”, including by borrowing ideas that have proven successful. In fact, two of our newest programs, Mindset Scholars and Innovation Fellows are inspired by well-known, successful programs.
Mindset Scholars is based on ideas from SCU Law’s TechEdge JD program, except we’ve applied those concepts to first-year SCU undergraduates. In this issue, you can read the paper that Professors Laura Norris and Eric Goldman published this year describing the TechEdge JD program.
Similarly, our Innovation Fellows program is modeled after a successful program at Stanford University called University Innovation Fellows. We’ve reimagined it for SCU with the help of Professors Kathy Sun and Keith Yocam in SCU’s School of Education and Counseling Psychology (ECP).
One of our Fall programs included an outdoor “Movie Night” screening of the General Magic documentary. If you aren’t familiar with that story, the movie documents the invention of the iPhone before there was an iPhone, and perfectly illustrates how taking risks, even those that lead to failure, can eventually result in the biggest successes.
Read on for more ideas on how to build confidence and develop the skills to manage risk!

We hope you enjoy this issue!
