On April 5, 2024, the Center for Professional Development was honored to collaborate with the Counseling Psychology Department to host a well-attended and impactful workshop. This event was made possible through the support of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Emphasis at the Santa Clara University School of Education and Counseling Psychology.
Attendees—including mental health providers, SCU faculty, staff, and students—gained valuable insights into empathetic and effective suicide prevention strategies and risk assessment tools for supporting at-risk adolescents. Despite the inherent complexity of this subject, Suzanne Levy, Ph.D., from the Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) International Training Institute, delivered an especially insightful presentation.

LGBTQ+ Mental Health Affirming Care Symposium - November 7, 2025

Keep an eye out for this annual event every fall! More about the 2026 event taking place on October 2nd is here.
“Each year, ECP brings this symposium back because the need for affirming mental health care has not diminished—it has only grown more urgent. What makes the event special is the sense of community it creates: clinicians, students, and advocates learning side by side, gaining both practical tools and renewed hope.” — Chongzheng Wei, Assistant Professor and LGBTQ+ Counseling Emphasis Coordinator
Our 2025 event focused on: “Grief and Hope: Affirming LGBTQ+ Individuals in Challenging Times.” Attendees heard from mental health experts about how to support LGBTQ+ individuals through grief and inspire hope. A new addition to this year's event was a panel of LGBTQ+ youth who opened up about their personal experiences for a segment titled, “What Mental Health Professionals Should Know About Us.”
Much gratitude to our speakers Sand Chang, Dean Jal Khambatta, Sean Garcia, and our LGBTQ+ youth panelists for leading us through insightful discussion and reflection. Thank you as well to LGBTQ+ Counseling Emphasis Coordinator Chongzheng Wei, our staff, and community partners for supporting the success of this event.
