We are thrilled to join Jesuit universities in Mexico in bringing this mission-driven, Indigenous-owned and -run cooperative to our campus community.

Santa Clara University’s partnership with Capeltic is a tangible manifestation of the university’s Jesuit values and we are thrilled to be the first U.S. university to sell Capeltic coffee on campus. Capeltic Coffee is available at the Cadence Cyber Cafe, located in the Leavey School of Business in Lucas Hall.

This partnership builds on the foundation of decades of ministry of the Jesuits with indigenous people in Chiapas, Mexico. Together, the Jesuits and the Tseltal families in Chilón, Chiapas formed a cooperative, Yomol A’tel, driven by the desire to circumvent the exploitative market economy that compounded generational debt and forced migration among Indigenous farmers.

SCU students returning from an Ignatian Center immersion program to the cooperative advocated to bring this partnership, with its high-quality, organic coffee, to life here in the US. Following the leadership of the Jesuit Universities in Mexico serving Capeltic Coffee, Santa Clara University now joins this activation of the global Jesuit network to support an economic model that uplifts the dignity of people and the earth.

Capeltic Coffee, from Chiapas, Mexico to SCU!

Opening in October of 2025, Capeltic Coffee will now be served at Lucas Hall's Cadence Cyber Cafe! This exciting project is the culmination of years of hard work by students and staff following multiple immersion trips to Chiapas, Mexico. We are thrilled to join Jesuit universities in Mexico and Latin America in bringing this mission-driven, Indigenous-owned and -run cooperative to our campus community.

(cap-el-tee-k)

Capeltic is a Tseltal word. "Capel" means coffee and "-tic" is the inclusive plural. The name is the acknowledgement of the work provided by each hand that took care of the grains of coffee, roasted them, and packaged them to be enjoyed by you. Each cup served supports producers in Chiapas.
