How are you flourishing? The debut of Class Voices

Santa Clara Magazine offers a new way for Broncos to share their life stories.

Later this year, the university alumni publication, Santa Clara Magazine, will debut a beautiful redesign with engaging new features. As part of this effort, Class Notes is becoming Class Voices — to highlight the insights, values, and distinctiveness of our Bronco family while providing alumni a chance to share life moments with their classmates.

The spring issue has a theme: Flourishing. By flourishing, we mean a state of well-being — spiritual, moral, physical, social, or societal — that one can attain, often through a growth-oriented and resilient mindset and strong habits of mind and heart. 

Our first Class Voices questions for you are:

  • How are you flourishing?
  • Who inspires you to flourish and why?
  • How do you define flourishing in your life?

We would like your responses to be fairly brief, a few sentences. You could write about your reactions to the questions below or whatever has inspired you this year:

  • The birth of a child, grandchild, or other loved one
  • A wedding
  • A new job
  • An anniversary of any kind
  • A special ritual
  • Work you are doing to enable your community to thrive
  • A memory that keeps you going
  • A conversation or encounter that helped you on your way
  • Advice or an appreciation that might help others on their way

Please send your Class Voice on flourishing to SCMagazine@scu.edu by February 28. Statements should be no more than 150 words and should include a headshot (iPhone photos are fine). Please also find below some FAQs about the magazine redesign.

Why a redesign?

We are broadening Santa Clara Magazine’s editorial scope to help people better understand what’s important at and because of our university and to inspire and support readers to live a life of purpose. We promise a beautiful and engaging publication this spring that is rooted in the Santa Clara tradition.

What is the process for the redesign?

The process began last year with an extensive survey of you, our readers, and we have used that as an essential guide for how we proceed. At the same time, we convened a magazine advisory group of alumni, staff, and faculty (the full list is below), which met periodically so we could make sure to get a diverse array of perspectives and options. We also consulted throughout the process with senior leaders at Santa Clara, as well as many others in the Santa Clara community. Our internal team is working closely with an editorial and design group with experience at other leading civic, educational, and cultural institutions, such as the Getty Center, the New York Times, and Stanford University.

Why are we changing Class Notes? 

Alumni notes have been around at universities since before World War I, but because of the Internet and social media, alumni are more likely to update one another through online channels, in-person, or through other alumni communications. As a result, the number of submissions at many universities, including at Santa Clara, has diminished greatly over the years. Class Voices will capture the original spirit of Class Notes, but enable each of you to share more meaningful updates — the kind of news that speaks to who you are as a person and that you could not find anywhere else.
