Newest Class of Johnson Scholars Named at SCU

Ten incoming freshmen have been chosen as Santa Clara University Johnson Scholars, an honor awarded to those who meet rigorous personal and academic criteria.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 29, 2014 —A teen who already has studied the use of nanotechnology for cancer treatment; a state flute champion who has logged 600 volunteer hours; and several honor society members who created service clubs or nonprofits in their spare time.

These impressive students are among the 10 incoming Santa Clara University freshmen chosen as Santa Clara University Johnson Scholars for 2014.

The Johnson Scholars program is funded by a generous gift from donors Rupert and Maryellie Johnson as a way to help students and enhance the University’s mission. The program was established to award full, renewable academic scholarships to up to 10 of SCU’s most academically accomplished, leadership-minded applicants.

During their four years the Johnson Scholars are given premier access to the University’s top leadership and honors programs, including the prestigious Johnson Leadership Fellows program, which is a summer stipend for a self-designed leadership experience.

“We welcome these incredibly driven and community-minded student leaders,” said SCU President Michael Engh, S.J. “Each of them embodies the values that the Johnsons sought to honor with this scholarship: compassion, leadership, integrity, and academic excellence.”

The newest Johnson Scholars hail from six states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Washington, and Wisconsin.
