Graduate Commencement 2016

Advanced Degrees Awarded to Joyous Students at Santa Clara University Ceremony

More than 800 recipients of advanced degrees celebrated their commencement Friday evening.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 11, 2016— As family and friends cheered from Santa Clara University’s Buck Shaw Field at Stevens Stadium on Friday evening, more than 800 students of business, counseling psychology, education, engineering, and pastoral ministry were awarded their master’s diplomas and -- in one case -- a Ph.D.

Santa Clara University’s 165th graduate-level commencement ceremony took place at 7:30 p.m. June 10.

During the event, Santa Clara University President Michael Engh, S.J., called on the graduates to carry on the values espoused by the Jesuit, Catholic university, saying “you are the voices of justice in an increasingly complex and inequitable world.”

“You are the hands that will refashion society so that all are treated with dignity,” he added. “You are the minds that will shape this nation’s policies to care for the weak and the needy. And you are the hearts that will serve with compassion.”

During the evening, advanced degrees were conferred upon students from the Leavey School of Business (255 total); the School of Engineering (366); the School of Education and Counseling Psychology (210); and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Pastoral Ministries program (3).

Prior to the ceremony, students Yuanying Deng, Nagasushma Devarapalli, Aditee Nagle, Layne David Orr, Zhe Xu, and Qianqian Zhong were awarded the School of Engineering’s Graduate Academic Excellence in Engineering Awards.

The graduates hail from 19 states and 22 countries, provinces, and territories.
