When “Leaning In” Isn’t Enough

Women’s Conference at Santa Clara University Will Focus on Building Resilience in Young Women

April 30 OWN IT summit is focused on helping young women develop the resilience they need when their confidence hits unexpected obstacles.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 24, 2017 —The Oscar-winning producer of Spotlight, Blye Faust, and Beverly Hills’ first female chief of police, Sandra Spagnoli, will be the keynote speakers at a unique women’s summit April 30, called OWN IT. The conference, organized by Santa Clara University students affiliated with the campus Women in Business club, is focused on helping young women develop the resilience they need when their confident strides into the workplace are met with obstacles that they’ve only read about in the news.

The event will take place April 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the California Mission Room of Santa Clara University’s Benson Memorial Center, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053.

"Young women today don’t have any problem believing in themselves,” said Isabella Giannini, co-chair of the summit. “But they sometimes don’t know what to do when they hit the real world, and encounter sexism or other obstacles that we had hoped would have disappeared by now. We believe our incredible lineup of speakers will teach valuable skills that attendees can use to grow and build on."

To attract young attendees, the event was kept purposefully affordable ($15 to $20 per ticket). Sixteen young girls from Cristo Rey high school have been invited to attend for free, and others are expected from Notre Dame, Presentation and St. Francis high schools. At least 100 university students are expected to attend.

Speakers will address issues including building confidence to ask important questions; ways to conquer fear; how to be resilient in times of change, adversity, suffering or loss; being an authentic leader; building a network; and finding your own unique voice.

The full agenda for the conference can be found at the conference website https://www.scuownit.com/.
