James Fitzpatrick played rugby for the Santa Clara Broncos. After graduation in 1915, he trained and was selected to the American Rugby Union. In 1920, they competed in the Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. He and his team upset the French, who were favored in an 8-0 victory. His gold medals are on display at the De Saisset Museum. Fitzpatrick was inducted into the Santa Clara Hall of Fame in 1979.
