Mike Macfarlane, originally from Stockton, came to Santa Clara after graduating from nearby Lincoln High School in 1982. Macfarlane was Santa Clara’s starting catcher until 1985, when he was drafted in the 4th round of the MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals. That year, he became the Royals first rookie catcher to start on opening day since 1965. Macfarlane spent the majority of his Major League career in Kansas City, but also had brief stints with the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics. He finished his MLB career with the A’s in 1999. Macfarlane is still the Kansas City Royals’ leader in all-time games caught.
