Harold Toso and his brother Harvey, known as the “Toso Twins”, were multi-sport athletes in high school who excelled at baseball, basketball, and football. Their hard to miss talent caught the eye of Santa Clara and the Toso twins enrolled the next fall on a full baseball scholarship. While at Santa Clara Harold earned All-league honors as a first baseman for two out of his four years. Toso was known all around Santa Clara as a man who exemplified what a Santa Clara student is, as well as an elite athlete. We see this in Toso’s career after Santa Clara. After graduating, Toso received his law degree two years later at SCU and then went on to become a prominent insurance executive and philanthropist. From this, Toso was a generous contributor not only to to scholarships for athletes at Santa Clara, but also donated the funds to build the Toso Pavilion, the predecessor to the Leavey Center. This athletic center, which was named after him, was used for the basketball and volleyball teams from 1975-2000.
