The Comprehensive Examination (COMP Exam) is a take-home essay exam devised to help you synthesize your learning into a powerful personal and professional statement.

  • The COMP Exam is required for both the 45 and 90 unit programs.
  • The exam is given only during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters (not Summer).
  • You have two weeks to complete the exam.
  • Take this exam near the end of your program, typically the last or second to last quarter before your graduation.

This is a general schedule for the COMP exam during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters:

  • Week 1: Email is sent to students to sign-up for the COMP exam. Sign-ups are open for 2 weeks.
  • Week 3: COMP exam begins - exam instructions are emailed before 5pm on Monday to those who are registered to take the exam.  You have two weeks to complete the exam.

  • Week 5: the COMP exam is due by 5pm on Monday. The exam will then be reviewed by the department.

  • Exam review could take several weeks.

  • Exam results will be emailed to students once ALL exam results have been finalized.

Below is an EXAMPLE 90 unit Comprehensive exam to help you prepare.  The actual exam prompt may differ and is subject to change at any time without notification.
