Who was Atlas?

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a titan, a member of the first generation of the immortal gods. He ruled the cosmos and bore the heavens on his shoulders. Homer referred to Atlas as "the thinker of mischief," who knows the depths of the whole sea, and has under his care the pillars which hold heaven and earth. When later thinkers understood the earth to be round, representations of Atlas took on a new form, showing him holding the globe on his shoulders. The 16th century cartographer, Gerardus Mercator, coined the term “atlas” to describe a collection of maps.
