Born and raised in Alameda, California, Bob earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from the University of San Francisco, including a junior year at Loyola University Chicago's Rome Center in Italy. Following an internship in human support at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, he entered the Society of Jesus (California Province) in 1980. Bob completed philosophy studies at Loyola University Chicago and earned a Master’s in Education from Boston College before undergoing his teaching regency at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona. After finishing theological studies at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, he was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned to Brophy Prep. During this time, Bob taught Scripture and co-founded and co-directed the Loyola Project, an afterschool program for at-risk inner-city youth.

Bob's international service includes completing his tertianship in Northern Ireland while teaching at St. Malachy’s Primary School in Coleraine during the time of the Good Friday Agreement. He then spent over a decade in Zambia, serving as a lecturer and chaplain at Charles Lwanga Teacher Training College and Zambia Catholic University, as well as teaching at Lechwe International School.

Upon returning to the United States, he served as a university chaplain at Stanford University for seven years before joining SCU.
