Chad Raphael (B.A., Harvard; Ph.D., Northwestern) is a Professor of Communication at Santa Clara University. A scholar of political communication, his research encompasses news and politics, deliberative democracy, games for civic learning, and environmental communication. Chad co-authored Deliberation, Democracy, and Civic Forums: Improving Equality and Publicity (Cambridge University Press) and wrote Investigated Reporting: Muckrakers, Regulators, and the Struggle over Television Documentary (University of Illinois Press), which won three awards for best book of the year. He has published in numerous journals in communication, political science, and education, frequently co-authoring articles with undergraduate students.  He consults on communication campaigns for environmental organizations, has served as chair of the board of two environmental organizations — the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation and the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition — and led a task force on greening the International Communication Association. Chad has also chaired the Communication Department, as well as committees that designed Santa Clara’s Core Curriculum and that helped draft the University’s Strategic Plan.
