Brett Johnson Solomon is an Associate Professor in the Liberal Studies program at Santa Clara University. She is the director of the SCU Future Teachers project, a pipeline program for students of color who want to teach in urban and underserved communities. Brett is passionate about social justice as the starting point for educating future teachers and community leaders. Hence, her current research focuses on the school to prison pipeline, specifically implicit associations among school teachers that lead to suspensions and expulsion among students of color. Brett’s past research focused on delinquent decision making among adolescent female offenders, and she served as a consultant for the Santa Clara County Juvenile Probation Department and the Office of Women’s Policy and Programs on best practices for their detained female populations. Brett has served the university community in several capacities and was recently appointed the Interim Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion for the 2016-2017 school year. Before joining the faculty at SCU, Brett had a decade of administrative experience in community service organizations that served children and youth in both Northern and Southern California. She is the co-founder and first executive director of the former Girls Incorporated of San Mateo County, and was an educational consultant for the Life Learning Academy; Delancy Street Foundation’s charter high school serving delinquent and dependent students. Brett earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Educational Psychology from UCLA. She also has a Master of Education in Early Childhood Risk and Prevention from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from U.C. Berkeley.
