A native of San Francisco, Canelo was a standout athlete on the football field for Santa Clara. He played Bronco ball for four seasons, and was in the founding class of “Block SC”. A highlight of his footballer days at SCU was his team’s Orange Bowl Championship in 1950. The Broncos beat the Kentucky Wildcats 21-13 following a 7-2-1 season. After his collegiate athletic career, Canelo served in the Korean War with the Marine Corp.
