Alan Gallagher '67
  • Sport: Baseball
  • Position: 3rd Base
  • Inducted in 1983

Alan Gallagher was inducted into Santa Clara’s Athletic Hall of Fame for athletic achievements and commitment to the Jesuit values of competence, conscience, and compassion. As a member of the Bronco Baseball team, Gallagher’s stellar play was enough to earn an All-American nomination. His success on the field at Santa Clara was noticed by a number of MLB teams, the most notable being his hometown team, the San Francisco Giants. Gallagher was selected 14th by the Giants in the 1965 MLB Draft. On April 7, 1970, Al Gallagher made history as the first native San Franciscan to play for the Giants. In his rookie year, he hit .277. Gallagher went on to play for four seasons with the San Francisco Giants and was eventually traded to the California Angels. Gallagher played a total of 442 games during his career. He had 1,264 at bats, 333 hits, 114 runs, 11 home runs, 130 RBIs, 42 doubles, 9 triples, and 7 stolen bases. After Gallagher’s career as an athlete he returned to baseball in a different capacity. In the 1980s, he managed an array of teams affiliated with the Braves and Indians. Gallagher coached multiple minor league teams including the Kansas City T-Bones and the Bend Bandits.  Gallagher played and managed for a lengthy 35 years, which is perfectly appropriate for the man with the longest name in the history of professional baseball—Alan Mitchell Edward George Patrick Henry Gallagher.
