Nicholas attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, playing baseball, football, and basketball. During his first season of Basketball at Santa Clara, Nicholas was an All-Californians First Team selection. The next year, Nicholas led the Broncos to a 15-3 record. This was the best record on the Pacific Coast and he was again named an All-Californians First Team selection. Nicholas was also involved off the court at the University of Santa Clara. He was Junior Class President and Chairman of the Junior Prom Committee. After graduating, Nicholas joined the Dean Witter & Co. Team. Where he was named captain, and led the team to a Montgomery Street Championship and undefeated season.
