Vincent Thomas was a boxer for the University of Santa Clara. While juggling boxing and his studies, Thomas worked as a sports coach and physical education instructor. He graduated from undergrad in 1932. Thomas went on to attend law school and become a successful politician. He won a campaign against Charles M. Smith to become the State Assemblyman for the 68th District of California. He also served as Chairman of the Committee on Intergovernmental Relations. Thomas had the longest record of service in the Assembly and was known affectionately as "Dean of the Assembly”. In 1963, the suspension bridge between San Pedro and Terminal Island (So. California) was named after Vincent Thomas. He was inducted to Santa Clara’s Hall of Fame in 1980.
