Having grown up in France, Phil Von Buchwaldt virtually willed himself to the United States before global recruiting boomed, working hard on his English, playing on the French under-18 team that won a world championship, and then jumping at a chance to show his skills at a weeklong camp in Irvine, California Von Buchwaldt attracted the attention of former SCU legendary head coach Dick Davey. Von Buchwaldt was a 6’11 center for the SCU Basketball Team from 1992-1996. He helped his team upset #2 seeded Arizona in the first round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament. He was also part of a WCC Tournament Championship in 1993, and a regular season WCC Championship in 1995. After graduating from Santa Clara with a B.A. in marketing and an MBA in Finance, Von Buchwaldt played four years professionally back home in France and in Belgium.
