At the peak of the Bronco Men's Basketball program, Williams led SCU to five postseason tournaments: once to the NCAA Tournament, and four times to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). During his career at Santa Clara, head coach Williams compiled a 344-274 overall record, making him the winningest Men’s basketball coach in Santa Clara history. Following the successful 1972-73 season, Williams was named the Northern California Coach of the Year, and in 2011 he was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame. Williams' career produced two of Santa Clara's most memorable players, Kurt Rambis and Nick Vanos, who eventually went on to play in the NBA for the LA Lakers and Phoenix Suns, respectively. In his eight years as the Director of Athletics and Recreation, Santa Clara added Women's Golf and Women's Water Polo programs, renovated and improved the campus athletic facilities, and increased scholarship support for student-athletes. Additionally, during his time as athletic director, Williams oversaw 19 West Coast Conference Championships in seven different sports and 23 postseason tournaments.
