Beginning in Fall 2026, Santa Clara University students will receive medical services from Sutter Health at the Bronco Student Health Clinic, located in Sutter University Square Care Center, at 1111 Washington Street, adjacent to campus.
Medical services (healthcare services and access to practitioners) will continue without interruption at the Cowell Center as we prepare for this future transition.
The following FAQs are a starting point. We’ll continue to expand and refine it in the weeks ahead as new questions arise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will there be any service interruptions during the transition?
No, all services with Student Medical Services will continue as usual until June 11, 2026.
Will the scope of services change (e.g., primary care, women’s health, immunizations, lab work)?
The Bronco Student Health Clinic, located in Sutter University Square Care Center, will provide all services offered by Student Medical Services. In addition, they will be able to perform imaging/X-rays.
Will there be changes in CAPS?
No, CAPS will continue as is and is not directly impacted by this change.
Will there be changes to SCU Emergency Medical Services (EMS)?
No, SCU EMS will continue to operate and provide medical care on campus as it currently does.
Will the Registered Dietitian remain onsite at SCU?
Yes, the Registered Dietitian will remain onsite at SCU. Students wishing to be referred off-campus can make an appointment at the Bronco Student Health Clinic to inquire about a referral within their insurance network or can consult the Case Manager within Student Health, Counseling, and Well-Being.

Care & Continuity
When would any potential changes take effect?
Students can continue to utilize Student Medical Services (SMS) on campus until June 11, 2026, at which time it will fully close.
How will students, faculty, and families be kept informed?
The University will provide regular communication to students, faculty, staff, and families, and this FAQ page will continue to be updated through Fall 2026.
How will after-hours or urgent care be managed?
Students should continue to seek after-hours services as they are now, and can continue to call Campus Safety Services and Emergency Medical Services at 408-554-4441 for medical emergencies on campus.
Will they prescribe medication?
The Bronco Student Health Clinic, located in Sutter University Square Care Center, will partner with local pharmacies for same-day delivery to the clinic for pickup during the regular operating hours, and/or students can also request delivery to their homes.
There will be no delivery fee for home delivery for most prescriptions when ordered at least one day in advance. Same-day delivery fees may apply for timely medication needs.
How will continuity of care be handled for students with ongoing or complex medical needs?
Students needing their medical records should complete a Release of Information form, and the staff can send medical records as attachments via secure message. Students can then print them and bring them to their next appointment, or ask to have them sent electronically to their new provider.
Cowell Center front desk staff can provide additional information and/or answer questions.
Access and Affordability
What will the hours be?
The Bronco Student Health Clinic, located in Sutter University Square Care Center, will be open Monday through Friday, 8 am–5 pm.
Can all students be seen at the Bronco Student Health Clinic regardless of insurance?
Yes, regardless of insurance, all degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students will have access to these services regardless of their health insurance plan. Services will now be billable to insurance, helping to lower out-of-pocket expenses for students. If a student’s health insurance isn’t accepted, they can receive these services at no cost under this new healthcare model for SCU students.
- The SCU Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) will be accepted at the Bronco Student Health Clinic located in Sutter University Square Care Center. For students not on SHIP, they can learn if their insurance is covered at sutterhealth.org/health-plan.
- If students are prescribed medication or referred elsewhere (e.g., for specialty care), they will be responsible for those expenses. Students with Kaiser should inquire about having their prescription orders sent to Kaiser to help keep medication costs down.
- If students have questions about services or costs, they should inquire before or at the appointment and/or contact their insurance company if they have questions regarding their coverage.
- Services not included on this list may be billed to a student in accordance with standard billing and financial assistance policies.
Can students seek treatment at Sutter University Square Care Center before Fall 2026?
Yes, students may now visit the Sutter University Square Care Center at 1111 Washington Street. The care center is open to the public.
Students should confirm that their individual health insurance is accepted. For students on insurance plans not accepted, students will be responsible for all out-of-pocket expenses until August 1, 2026.
Will the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) still be available for students?
Yes, the University will continue to offer SHIP to students.
Will any of this impact SCU’s immunization requirements?
No, the immunization requirements will remain the same and can be found on the Immunizations page.
Privacy & Records
How will student medical records be handled or transferred?
Due to privacy laws and regulations, no medical records will be transferred.
Will confidentiality protections remain the same?
Federal and state laws provide the same protections. Students can review how Sutter protects their information at sutterhealth.org/patient-resources/privacy.
Will the university have access to medical records?
Medical records will not be shared with SCU unless students provide a Release of Information for a specific need.
Quality & Oversight
What accountability measures will be in place? How will student satisfaction be monitored?
The Bronco Student Health Clinic, located in Sutter University Square Care Center, and SCU representatives will meet quarterly to review the clinic's staffing, utilization, service quality, student satisfaction, and operational performance. Any data shared with the University will be provided in aggregated and/or de-identified form in compliance with HIPAA.

Staffing & Campus Integration
How will care be coordinated with campus wellness initiatives?
Student Health, Counseling, and Well-Being will continue to prioritize students' care and well-being. With this change, the Wellness Center will continue as is, and the majority of health promotion activities will originate from that office. The Wellness Center, CAPS, and our marketing and outreach teams will work in close collaboration to ensure well-being initiatives continue. In addition, the Associate Vice Provost for Student Health, Counseling, and Well-Being will meet quarterly with the Sutter representative to foster the partnership and campus collaboration.
Will athletic and travel medicine services be affected?
The Bronco Student Health Clinic, located in Sutter University Square Care Center, will provide these services and/or refer out within the network as needed.
