Karla Felix-Rivera developed an interest in evangelization, spirituality, and lay leadership upon meeting the Verbum Dei Missionaries in San Francisco in 1993. Discovering her call as an active agent in the Church, she pursued a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and a Masters in Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University. While studying at JST, she discovered how the Church’s canonical system is a powerful tool to safeguard the baptized faithful’s right and obligation to impact the Church by living out their missionary discipleship. Seeing the lack of female canonists, she completed a Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L) at the Catholic University of America in 2012. Her research and presentations focus on lay leadership and spirituality, ecclesial movements, structures of consecrated life with “mixed membership,” consecrated life law and marriage law. Karla is a doctor of canon law candidate at the University of St. Paul, in Ottawa, and a retreat leader. As a canonist, she has worked as a Defender of the Bond and Judge in diocesan tribunals (Los Angeles, Sacramento, Monterrey).
