Emma Chappell ‘24, Math major and Italian minor, this year’s recipient of the II Cenacolo Scholarship

“Hello, I am Emma Chappell ‘24, a current sophomore at Santa Clara University pursuing a major in Mathematics and a minor in Italian Studies. I am proud to be a recipient of this year’s Il Cenacolo Scholarship. In the fall of 2022, I will be going abroad to Rome, Italy. With the help of the Il Cenacolo Scholarship I will be able to travel extensively to be able to deeper connect to my Italian-American heritage. I would like to thank all of my Italian Professors at Santa Clara who have supported me and encouraged me throughout the application process. Grazie mille!

While at Santa Clara, I originally chose to pursue an Italian minor in order to be prepared while abroad, however, I’m now pursuing my minor because of my amazing experience with the Italian department at Santa Clara. Each class has enriched my own Italian identity and each professor has encouraged me to think critically about the power of language and cultural differences. With my experience as an Italian minor, my future abroad, and my more developed sense of Italianess, I wish to continue to study and use Italian throughout my life. I could not make this a reality without the help of my professors and all who have supported me while at Santa Clara."
