CBL

Looking for structured lesson plans aligned with the Common Core Standards in Language Arts?

Our Character Based Literacy Curriculum (CBL) offers easy-to-use lesson plans for more than 200 titles, ranging from high interest and engaging reads to traditional and challenging pieces of classic literature.

Sample Lesson Plans

  • Available in 40-, 60- and 90-minute segments
  • Featuring short activities and discussion topics
  • Based on nearly one hundred literacy strategies

Students grow as readers and writers at the same time as they learn how to become good people and good citizens.

Plans are available on a subscription basis at a cost of $500 per teacher per year. You will need no other materials beyond the books you teach.

CBL

CBL is in use in the majority of California counties, and has been part of the curriculum for more than 185,000 students throughout the United States.

It is particularly effective in teaching situations that require structure, where instructors prefer step-by-step lesson plans so that they can focus on teaching.

The curriculum was developed by Steve Johnson, director of character education at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.  A former teacher and principal, Johnson is a senior lecturer in the Santa Clara University School of Education.
