Dr. Catherine (Kitty) Murphy is Associate Professor of New Testament at Santa Clara University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on the Bible, the historical Jesus, gender in early Christianity, apocalyptic literature, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and a course on economic ethics titled “Wealth, Work and the Gospel.” She earned her doctorate in New Testament from the Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity program at the University of Notre Dame, where she worked on the Dead Sea Scrolls publication team. She has published three books, including Wealth in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Qumran Community (2002). She is currently preparing a book on the synoptic gospels that situates these early Christian testimonies in their economic and political contexts, as well as a new edition of a manuscript of the twelve minor prophets from Qumran. In addition, she serves on the steering committee of the “Economics in the Biblical World” section of the Society of Biblical Literature, and is preparing a proposal for a co-edited volume, The Oxford Handbook of the Bible and Economics.
