Realities at the US-Mexico Border

United States - Mexico Border, Nogales

Saturday, December 9 - Thursday, December 14, 2023

Cost: $750

This year, the Ignatian Center is delighted to continue our partnership with Kino Border Initiatives, a binational organization that works in the area of migration and is located in Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. The Kino Border Initiative’s vision is to help make humane, just, workable migration between the U.S. and Mexico a reality. Its mission is to promote US/Mexico border and immigration policies that affirm the dignity of the human person and a spirit of bi-national solidarity through:

  • Direct humanitarian assistance and accompaniment with migrants;
  • Social and pastoral education with communities on both sides of the border;
  • Participation in collaborative networks that engage in research and advocacy to transform local, regional, and national immigration policies

The majority of time on immersion is spent at the KBI aid center (comedor) for deported migrants in Mexico, where participants serve food and have the chance to speak with recently deported migrants. The core of the experience is listening to the stories of individuals impacted by the immigration system and building relationships with them. The group will also have the opportunity to hike in the desert, witness criminal prosecution of immigrants in Tucson, and learn more about the immigration system. You can learn more about Kino Border Initiatives and the work they do by visiting their website at https://www.kinoborderinitiative.org/

International Travel: This immersion includes traveling abroad, to apply you will need a valid passport and proof of vaccination. Passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally.
