Faculty

Population

Data are as of census and are presented by Academic Year (represented by Fall terms only).

Includes:

  • Faculty that are in SCU's system of record as of the Fall term
  • Faculty hired on a full-time annual contract of at least nine months, phased retirement or a similar reduced FTE appointment, leave of absence or sabbatical
  • Faculty hired for one term to teach a class
  • Jesuit School of Theology (2018-2019 forward)

Function

The Faculty visualization provides an in-depth view of the various faculty categories/types.

Special Notes

  • Academic Department - Each faculty member is reported in only one academic department. Faculty members with joint appointments in two or more disciplines are reported separately using a department name describing the joint appointment (example: Classics and Philosophy).
  • Faculty Clusters - Faculty in Ethnic Studies, Liberal Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Public Health Science, and Environmental Studies and Sciences are assigned to clusters according to their areas of expertise as determined by the Arts & Sciences Dean's Office. As such, these academic departments/programs may be reported in more than one cluster. Faculty in Science and Technology are assigned to clusters based on terms of their academic contract.
  • Data Quality – In 2016-2017 an audit from 2002-2003 through 2016-2017 was performed on instructor classifications in PeopleSoft, resulting in corrections to classifications of some instructors from faculty to academic staff. As a result, reports and data on faculty or classes taught by instructor type that were prepared by the Office of Institutional Research prior to 2016-2017 will present different headcount totals. Those differences are presented here.
  • Postdoctoral Appointments - Prior to 2019-2020, postdoctoral appointments were included in this visualization under "Other Term (Full-time)" and "Fixed Term (Part-time)".
