California Lawmakers’ Internet Privacy Event Being Hosted at Santa Clara University School of Law

"Balancing Privacy and Opportunity in the Internet Age" will be the topic of a series of panels before members of three California legislative committees this Thursday at Santa Clara University School of Law.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 10, 2013 — “Balancing Privacy and Opportunity in the Internet Age” will be the topic of a series of panels before members of three state legislative committees this Thursday at Santa Clara University School of Law.
 
The event — an informational meeting of California State Assembly Judiciary Committee; the Business, Professions and Consumer Protection Committee; and the Select Committee on Privacy — will take place on December 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mayer Theatre at Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053.  
 
The California legislature has recently taken an extremely active interest in regulating the Internet, with an astounding 215 proposed bills containing the word “Internet” in the last legislative session.  California's laws have important consequences for Internet users around the globe, as well as for the companies catering to them.
 
“We are pleased to welcome members of the California legislature to Silicon Valley for these important discussions about privacy and the Internet,” said Eric Goldman, director of the High Tech Law Institute of Santa Clara University School of Law. “This is an important step forward in building bridges and communication channels between Sacramento and Silicon Valley."
 
Topics on the agenda include: Why privacy matters; The collection, aggregation and sale of personal information online; California’s ‘Shine the Light ‘ law; and consumer privacy policies. A full agenda may be viewed at http://bit.ly/1gmUSju.
 
The meeting is expected to be attended by more than 20 members of California’s Assembly, as well as Internet privacy experts or specialists such as:
