Dean’s Leadership Forum Brings Social Justice Leaders to Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif., March 28, 2014-- Santa Clara University will welcome humanitarian Dolores Huerta and medical anthropologist Paul Farmer for the College of Arts and Sciences’ first “Dean’s Leadership Forum: The Intersection of the Humanities, Arts and Sciences for the Benefit of Humanity.” The events are free and open to the public.
“This forum is an opportunity to engage with people making a big impact on social injustice,” says Atom Yee, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “We hope the community will come to have important discussions on issues affecting their lives and the lives of those less fortunate and leave feeling inspired to do something about it.”
In a talk entitled “Weaving Moments Together,” Huerta will speak Sunday, April 6, about her work with the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the importance of bringing community movements together for social justice. She will also take questions from the audience. Huerta spent a lifetime fighting economic injustice. While she is most well-known for launching the National Farmworkers Association with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s, she has also played a major role in advocating the election of more women to political office and influencing legislation that supports equality and defends civil rights. She was inducted into the California Hall of Fame last year and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
Farmer will give a public lecture Monday, April 7, named after his book “In the Company of the Poor." Farmer is a medical anthropologist who has dedicated his life to giving the poor access to high-quality health care and has studied the role social inequities play in the distribution and outcome of infectious diseases. He co-founded Partners in Health to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them. He was named one of the 100 best global thinkers by ForeignPolicy.com in 2011.
