SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY
FINGERPRINT LIVE SCAN BACKGROUND CHECK INSTRUCTIONS
As part of Santa Clara University’s commitment to safety and compliance with state regulations, all employees working with minors or in positions of trust must undergo a background check. SCU has received authorization from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct electronic fingerprinting through a process called Live Scan.
To complete this process, you will need to visit a Live Scan location and provide certain documents. The following instructions outline the steps for completing your background check.
Instructions
Step 1: Notification & Training
Your department will notify you if a background check is required. Once notified, please inform the Office of Risk Management (risk@scu.edu) so we can assign you the necessary training course: "Protecting Children: Identifying and Reporting Sexual Misconduct." This self-paced course typically takes about an hour to complete.
Step 2: Gather Required Documents
You will need the following documents before visiting the Live Scan facility:
Step 3: Submit Signed Consent Form
Provide the signed consent form to your department lead or HR for record-keeping.
Step 4: Visit the Live Scan Facility
Take the completed BCIA 8016 Form to one of the approved Live Scan locations. Be prepared to pay the fingerprinting processing fee (approximately $35), which the department offering the program will reimburse. At the facility, you will be assigned an ATI#—be sure to retain this number for future reference.
Step 5: Track Your Background Check
You can track the status of your background check here using your ATI# and date of birth. Continue to check regularly until the status indicates that your report is complete.
Step 6: Notify Risk Management
Once your background check status shows as complete, please notify the Office of Risk Management (risk@scu.edu) so we can review the results.
Step 7: Results Review
We will review the background check results and notify your department lead of the findings.

Find a Live Scan Location
SCU does not provide fingerprinting services on campus. You must visit an off-campus Live Scan location, such as the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, Santa Clara Police Department, or another authorized location. Find a list of approved locations here:

Payment Information
The department offering the program will cover the fingerprinting processing fee, which you will pay directly to the Live Scan location. SCU will be billed for the cost of the DOJ and FBI background check, and your department may also be charged for this cost.
