College of Arts and Sciences Mock Class: The Birds, the Bees, and a Magic Trait: The Evolution of Red Flowers

Flowers are painted by the preferences of their pollinators. In the wild, flower color evolves not for human eyes, but by adapting to the distinct sensory systems of pollinators like birds and bees. This lecture explores how flowers produce color using different pigments, how those colors are perceived differently by pollinators, and why unrelated plant species often converge on similar colors through distinct biochemical routes. By following flower color from pigments to pollination to evolution, the lecture highlights how a single trait can shape ecological interactions and the origin of diversity. Santa Clara University undergraduates played essential roles in gathering data, analyzing results, and contributing to discoveries that reveal how evolution works in the natural world.

Professor Justen Whittall - Biology Faculty and SCU Alum (School of Engineering)

*You will be assigned a mock class based on your major.
