Announcing New Department Awards

We are excited to announce three new department awards:

Michael Sweeney Endowed Award

In December 2013, the front page of Chemical Connections mournfully announced the passing of beloved emeritus faculty Michael Sweeney. Michael's heirs indicated their desire to establish an award in his memory. We told you about this idea and many of you have responded with generosity. The result - we are getting this award off the ground and getting ready to give the Michael Sweeney Endowed Award to a deserving student or two, hopefully before the school year ends in June, 2016. Many alumni sent letters and donations. We are grateful for the generosity of the donors, particularly Michael Sweeney's heirs. We also thank Marie Brancati in the College of Arts and Sciences for putting in a lot of hard work, and Michael Carrasco and Linda Brunauer for their input.

John C. Gilbert and Stephen Martin Award in Organic Chemistry

Dr. Jack Gilbert and his co-author, Dr. Stephen Martin set up an endowment for a department award to be given to a Santa Clara Chemistry/Biochemistry student each year. Award is to a Senior chemistry or biochemistry major for outstanding performance in organic chemistry courses and/or research. Thank, you Jack and Steve, for your generosity.

Bastiani Research Award for Summer Research

Alumnus Dr. Richard Bastiani has given the department a generous donation that will provide summer research support for a student working with a faculty member in the department. In Summer of 2015, two students benefitted from this gift: Kyle Bandaccari and Lauren Schmitt. Thank you, Dr. Bastiani!
