Guiding Principles

  1. Community: To create a safe, welcoming climate where students bond and build connections related to doing mathematics and where each student is appreciated and respected for the unique perspective they bring to the learning experience.

  2. Active Learning: To increase student engagement in the learning process and to nurture academic improvement through proficient skill development and deep understanding of concepts in the tutored courses.

  3. Independent Learners:  To uphold academic integrity and empower students to become confident, responsible learners who are consistent, persistent, and resilient.

Diversity Statement

The Mathematics Learning Center at Santa Clara University fosters diversity in all of its dimensions and supports mathematics students in reaching their personal academic goals. All students, with their unique life experiences, worldviews, languages and voices, are respected and welcomed. We provide an environment that is conducive to diverse learning styles and unique learning challenges.  We also work with others to pursue justice and remedy current and historical inequities in higher education. Our center embraces the humanity of all people, celebrating the contributions each individual makes to the Math Learning Center, to Santa Clara University, and the wider community.

MLC Director

Linda Burks has always enjoyed mathematics and been eager to share that joy with others. She has taught problem solving on many levels, trained advanced students to work with younger students, and provided active opportunities for students to see the beauty of mathematics. Before coming to Santa Clara University in 2016, Linda earned her M.S. in mathematics and Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Michigan. Her research interests include effective ways of teaching problem solving and developing resources for achieving success in undergraduate mathematics education.
