Communications

Communications covers the transmission and reception of information across different media. This includes the design of the signaling set for robust communications, modulation of the signal, characterization of the medium through which the signal travels, error control coding. It also includes Information Theory -- the study of how much data can reliably be transmitted across certain media. Going up the stack, this area also includes link-layer and network-layer protocols.
