SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 26, 2015 — On Aug. 17, Santa Clara University School of Law welcomed the newest class of first-year J.D.-candidate students to the Jesuit, Catholic institution in Silicon Valley.

The 236 full-time and 31 part-time students hail from 25 states and eight foreign countries including China, Canada, India, and Germany.  Twenty-nine of the incoming students already have advanced degrees, 10 M.S.s; eight Ph.D.s; seven M.A.s; and two MBAs.

“We are pleased to welcome a new class of Santa Clara Law students, who bring a wonderfully diverse array of strengths and accomplishments to our student body,” said Lisa Kloppenberg, dean of Santa Clara Law. “This also will be the first class that will get to experience our new building, slated to open in Summer 2017.”

The class is 51 percent female and 49 percent male, with 46 percent identifying as ethnic minorities.

About 2,200 people applied for spots in this year’s class, which has a median age of 24.  The number of applicants to Santa Clara Law is slightly higher than last year, reversing a four-year decline and reflecting a renewed interest in legal education.

In addition to the students seeking their J.D. degrees, another 23 new students will pursue an advanced LL.M. law degree. Twenty-one hold law degrees from outside the United States, representing Argentina, Austria, Cameroon, China, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
