SCU student presenters Michael Turgeon, Taylor Groves, and Savannah Vickery

42nd Annual Undergraduate Research Conference a Success

On Saturday, April 23, 2016, the Department of Anthropology hosted the 42nd Annual Western Departments of Anthropology and Sociology Undergraduate Research Conference on the SCU campus. The conference was one the largest hosted in recently history with over 100 attendees. The following 16 universities were represented through 50 student research presentations: Barnard College, California State University, Fresno, Loyola Marymount University, Mills College, Northwestern University, San Jose State University, Santa Clara University, Sonoma State University, St. Mary's College, Stanford University, University of California Irvine, University of San Francisco, University of Southern California, and Vanguard University. 

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from the conference's keynote speaker, Dr. Lamia Karim, Associate Professor of Anthropology, at University of Oregon, over lunch. Dr. Karim spoke about her research on micro-finance and garment labor in Bangladesh and also served as a faculty chair for panels throughout the day. The conference was chaired and organized by Mythri Jegathesan, Assistant Professor of Anthropology. Other SCU Anthropology faculty who served as session chairs included Ana Araujo, Michelle Bezanson, Patrick Gallagher, and Lee Panich.
