Dr. Panich receives National Science Foundation Grant to fund archaeological research on colonial California.

Assistant Professor Lee Panich has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to support collaborative archaeological research he is conducting with Tsim Schneider (UC Santa Cruz). The $190,000 grant will fund two years of research to understand how Native American societies persisted under Euro-American colonialism. Drs. Panich and Schneider will examine these issues on the Pacific Coast of central California, where local Coast Miwok groups lived at the crossroads of the Spanish, Russian, Mexican, and American frontiers. The work will involve students from SCU and UC Santa Cruz as well as members of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.
