Loewen Gets In Sync With Audiosync

Rising senior calls SCU a cappella “family”

Rising senior calls SCU a cappella “family”

By Ally O’Connor ’20

Singing through her undergraduate years, Annie Loewen ’20 (Communication) has found her “musical family” in Audiosync, one of Santa Clara University’s five A Cappella groups. In addition to her involvement with the Honors Program, Residence Life, and the Santa Clara Review’s student-only sister-publication, The Owl, Loewen shares that, in the two years since auditioning for Audiosync, the decision “has ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, because SCU a cappella has given me a community of students who appreciate music and have a passion for sharing it.”

Founded in 2010 by music majors and minors, the co-ed A Cappella group today includes students from all grade levels, majoring in a wide variety of fields, including but not limited to engineering, biology, psychology, business, public health, environmental studies, and neuroscience. In the 2018-19 academic year, Loewen says the group had three basses, three tenors, four altos, five sopranos, and a self-taught beatboxer. This upcoming year, Kylie Griggs '22 (Environmental Science) and Kyle Asano '20 (Mechanical Engineering) will lead the group, structuring rehearsals and arranging most of the songs, which range from alternative rock to 80s music, contemporary pop, and even a couple of Disney songs.

In concert with her academic studies, Loewen explains that Audiosync has also allowed her to bring her communication skills to the group: “I run the social media accounts for Audiosync, so I implement strategies I've learned in Communication classes and use creative thinking that I've learned in Creative Writing to come up with interesting and fun social media posts."

In the past, Audiosync has performed at events all over campus, including SA’s Matsuri, APSU’s Night Market, the Bucky Awards, Relay for Life, the Bronco Bench Foundation’s Red and White Gala, Golden Circle, and SCU sporting events. To keep up with upcoming concert dates and Audiosync news, visit the group’s Facebook (SCU Audiosync) and Instagram (@scuaudiosync) accounts.

Loewen glows when she speaks about her group and proudly states that “Audiosync has provided me with lifelong friends. We get coffee together, study together, go on an overnight retreat as a group, go out to dinner, and—not surprisingly—do karaoke together.  We are supportive of one another celebrating musical and personal accomplishments. I consider the members of Audiosync to be my best friends. We truly are family.”
