Program Values

Thriving Neighbors Values

In the modern world, we encourage our students, faculty, staff, and community to embrace Jesuit wisdom by inspiring awareness, thought, reflection, discernment, and action. Participants learn first-hand how Ignatian wisdom can enrich lives, bridge differences, and catalyze meaningful change toward a more equitable, sustainable world.

Purpose:

Promote respect for human dignity, and create sustainable program models that improve community and university outcomes while making the community a more just and sustainable place.

Ownership:

Mutual ownership: community residents, institutional partners in community-based agencies and SCU stakeholders.

Collaboration:

Recognize that individuals with experiences different from our own can teach and enlighten us in ways that can transform our hearts, minds and lives for the better.

Alignment - Learn from one another in authentic conversations that allow us to share our perspectives and critically analyze the world together.

Accompaniment - Use dialogue as a sociopolitical, educative tool to engage learners in questioning their historical and social situation, to experience empathy for one another and to make a commitment to move forward together.

Solidarity - Take action as a community to address structural
inequalities that perpetuate poverty and discrimination.

Fall in Love

Written by the former General Father of the Jesuits, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

Nothing is more practical than
finding God, than
falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way.
What you are in love with,
what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.
It will decide
what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings,
how you spend your weekends,
what you read, whom you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in Love, stay in love,
and it will decide everything.
