Fr. William J. Rewak

William J. Rewak, S.J., is Chancellor of Santa Clara University.

He arrived at Santa Clara as an Assistant Professor of English in 1970 after earning a Ph.D. in Literature at the University of Minnesota. He was appointed Rector of the Jesuit Community in 1971 and a member of the Board of Trustees. The Board elected him President in 1976; in 1988, he left Santa Clara and after a sabbatical year at Harvard was elected President of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, where he stayed for eight years. He then was appointed Director of the Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos, California; after seven years he moved to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where he taught poetry and worked as an administrator in the Jesuit Community. He returned to Santa Clara as Chancellor in July of 2011.  He has published articles on literary criticism, theology, and higher education. His first book of poetry is entitled, “The Right Taxi,” his second, “The Orphan Bear.” Besides poetry, additional interests include photography, American history, and mystery novels.
