Hughes was recognized for her commitment to student career development

A recent message to Stephanie Hughes, ESS Senior Lecturer, came from an alum who let her know that she finally found her dream position in state-of-the art waste recycling  “I feel on the right track. Thank you for making waste such an exciting topic for me.” For the past several years, Stephanie has brought her passion for student vocations, her professional network, and her knowledge of the field to her role as the departmental internship coordinator.

To honor her impact, Stephanie was presented with Outstanding Career Influencer Award from SCU’s Career Center on May 3. According to Vania Tong of the Career Center, “Stephanie’s genuine commitment to student career development and success is evident at many levels. Not only does she integrate individualized support and curate alumni panels in her courses, she also commits additional resources to research alumni experiences to inform future ESS programming.”

Stephanie has facilitated SCU’s Proseminar course since Fall 2015. In 2019, she retooled Proseminar to support students earlier in their SCU careers, which has allowed ESS students to become more empowered as sophomores and juniors seeking vocational internship experiences. Says Stephanie, “I am grateful for the gift of time that so many alumni provide through the Proseminar panels and one-on-one informational interviews with our current students.
