New scholarship: Racist roots of climate crisis

New paper published by ESS Lecturer Ted Grudin

New paper published by ESS Lecturer Ted Grudin

The Earth Island Journal has published Ted Grudin's latest piece, "How White Supremacy Caused the Climate Crisis". The essay explores the role that racial supremacy, biblical claims of human dominion over the Earth, and other ideas such as Manifest Destiny, precipitated the abuse of our planet's ecosystems and led to the current climate crisis. The essay also acknowledges the racist attitudes held by many of the environmental movement's intellectual founders. Ted argues that the intersectionality of racism and ecological destruction means that we cannot resolve one issue without also confronting the other. For us, as environmentalists, this means that addressing the climate crisis also requires overcoming racist ideologies.
