Faculty Spotlight: Sonja Mackenzie and Laura Chyu

Sonja Mackenzie and Laura Chyu (Public Health Program), along with Jill Pellettieri (Modern Languages and Literatures) were awarded a 2016-17 Thriving Neighbors Initiative Grant from the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education.

Sonja Mackenzie and Laura Chyu (Public Health Program), along with Jill Pellettieri (Modern Languages and Literatures) were awarded a 2016-17 Thriving Neighbors Initiative Grant from the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education for their project Building Health and Leadership at Washington Elementary School through "Project-based Learning: The Washington Elementary Health Equity Collaborative”.  This unique, cross-disciplinary and community partnership is explicitly designed to leverage data previously collected in the community to create meaningful co-learning experiences for faculty, students and community members through two SCU courses: Spanish 24, a new course offered in winter that is designed to build intercultural communication skills in health contexts, and Public Health 131 (Community Health), an ELSJ course offered in spring. Project-based co-learning activities in both courses will aim to directly enhance the health in the WES community.
