Internships

Five public health summer internships were funded for students to work at summer internships at non-profit organizations addressing the issues raised in the Symposium. In 2015, recipients will pursue internships with the following organizations:

Positive Women's Network—USA is a national advocacy organization led by women living with HIV, including transgender women. Based in Oakland, CA, PWN-USA builds leadership, creates tools and resources for advocates, develops strategic communications, and changes policy to uphold the rights and dignity of women living with HIV.

Public Health Institute—Adolescent Girls Advocacy and Leadership Initiative promotes research, leadership, and capacity building to promote adolescent girls' health, education, and livelihoods in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. Through workshops, seed grant funding, and technical assistance, AGALI contributes to a global movement advocating for girls. AGALI's partners have provided direct training and services for over 40,000 adolescent girls and their allies through more than 300 grassroots organizations.

Cancer Prevention Institute of California develops and implements innovative cancer prevention research and outreach programs to deliver a comprehensive arsenal for defeating cancer. With research into the causes of cancer, access to screening and treatment services, and survivorship, CPIC is dedicated to promoting social justice through epidemiologic research and prevention activities.

The Health Trust leads the Silicon Valley community in advancing wellness for all by eliminating disparities in health outcomes associated with differences in race, income, gender, age, and access to services. The Health Trust's work includes direct services, grant making and policy advocacy in many areas, including homelessness, nutrition, healthy aging, health insurance and access to health care, pediatric oral health, and services for AIDS patients.

Finally, the Valeriote Goldman funds will allow scholarships for two students to participate in Santa Clara University's Casa de la Solaridad Silvia Arriola Summer Program in Public Health in El Salvador. During this 4-week program, students will take the PHSC 170 course, Health Care and Public Health in El Salvador, as well as engage in internships with various community health programs in San Salvador. Kat Saxton, an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department, will be co-teaching PHSC 170 this summer.

Further support for the Valeriote Goldman Symposium on Public Health and Social Justice has been provided by The Health Trust though the funding of a Community Grant, allowing the Public Health Program to expand the financial support to our summer internship recipients.
