Samantha Castillo
New Orleans Immersion Participant

What I learned from my trip to New Orleans, is the importance of starting conversations, and forming relationships with others. During the very beginning of the trip, it was challenging for me to open up to the natives of New Orleans because I did not know how to embrace my own vulnerability with individuals I barely knew. In order to overcome this obstacle and become more comfortable with the people I met, I took the time to ask individual's more about their personal lives. In doing so, I received the opportunity to gain knowledge and thrive from the relationships I formed with people like Chief David. In addition to teaching me valuable life lessons, this immersion contributed to my vocational exploration by allowing me to fulfill my passion of helping people and getting to know more about their personal lives. As an aspiring teacher, forming connections with people is extremely important because it gives me the opportunity to learn more about a person’s individual needs, and how to better serve them.
